40 years on, we are reflecting on our choice to be a sustainable business. We did not need to choose this path; we chose it, and that choice shapes how we operate daily.

This all commenced long before Aveda and before recycling was cool; it started with a rose garden and some hair. That`s right, a wonderful woman named Margret Heathorne ran a community program for the mature aged in Ivanhoe called Linlithgow House. This beautiful house was just around the corner from the salon, and her prized rose garden was around the house. Even before Rocco purchased it in 1984, Margret was a salon guest, and when he did, they formed a great bond. She came for her cuts, perms, and weekly set. When Rocco learnt that Margret had a garden, he asked her if she would like some hair for her roses. Your hair is full of nitrogen and great for soil, especially roses. She accepted, and we gave her hair every few months till she retired.
Margret was a genuinely brilliant woman and became a member of our family; her daughter Susie took care of me (Shakira) and my sister Nabila for a few years, and we were flower girls at her wedding! Margret became the resident blowdry model for all apprentices who trained at Zucci; perfecting her blowdry was a kind of initiation into the salon.

From this small act of donating hair, we began looking at all the other ways to become a sustainable business. This then led to becoming an Aveda salon, where we ensured we recycled our paper, plastic, and all food waste. We are a member of the Sustainable Salons Australia (SSA) and have been for 8 years. We recycle/upcycle 95% of our salon`s waste through SSA. We compost things like tea and coffee waste and Easy Dry, which we use as weed mats and rags on our farm.
Lastly, when we designed our salon in South Melbourne in 2022, we chose to use the most sustainable fixtures and finishes we could, and partnering with Breathe made this super easy. The design was not compromised at all. The icing on our sustainable cake was the solar panels on our roof in South Melbourne that contribute 40% of the power we need to run the salon on a daily basis!
